Abstract

Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) is one of the plants used as a vegetable. The part of the plant that is often used is the fruit. Okra fruit contains flavonoids which have the potential as natural ingredients that are efficacious as medicine. Research on phytochemical screening and determination of total flavonoid content from okra fruit extract (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) has been carried out. This study aims to determine the phytochemical content and total flavonoid content of okra fruit extract. This extraction uses 70% ethanol solvent maceration method. The results of the maceration extraction are then carried out by an evaporation process to obtain a thick extract. The thick extract was then identified qualitatively using chemical reagents. The results of qualitative identification showed that okra fruit extract contains flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, triterpenoids, coumarins, phenolics and glycosides. The total flavonoid content was determined using the colorimetric-Aluminum Chloride method with UV-Vis spectrophotometric instruments. The total flavonoid content of okra fruit extract was 319.18 mg/100 gram with a Standard Deviation value of 0.18.
